7 Most Important Things To Do Everyday (Without exception)

by Derek Potocki on 03/26/2011 · 12 comments

In the flood of information that we encounter every day (often a courtesy of the Internet:) we get often sidetracked from doing what’s most important.

So I have decided to write 7 Most Important Things To Do Everyday (Without exception)

    1. Be grateful

Every day, It is necessary to be grateful for who I am and  for what I have. The way I practice Attitude of Gratitude is by asking myself a  question: What are 5 things I am grateful for?

The first answer that inevitably comes to my mind is: I breathe! The next one is: I am healthy. Followed by: I have dreams and desires. Followed by: I am creative! And: I can get the heck out of my comfort zones, when I want!

    2. Stay focused on what’s most important

Say to yourself: I can’t possibly do everything and be everywhere. What are the most important  things I can do today, so I can live without regrets?

    3. Decide which direction are you moving towards

Am I moving towards something or running away from something?

This is very important. If I always take actions designed to avoid things, I’m a fugitive. I act out of fear. I want to move toward things. I want to create my life. I want to be proactive, not reactive. I don’t ask questions like: How can I not experience this or that? I prefer: How can I experience this or that? How can I make it happen?

    4. Step out of your comfort zone(s)

What can I do today to step out of my comfort zone(s)?

This is probably one of the most important habits you can develop. How can I surprise myself. What can I do to push my limits. What new thing can I learn?

    5. Exercise humility

    You will never know everything.

Talk to people. Learn. Don’t be too proud to ask. This pride will slow down your Journey like a thousand tones stone tied up to your neck. I see people stay miserable for years, because they are too proud to ask for help, or to ask for specific information. This kind of pride is a killing kind.

    6. Have goals

Decide what you want to experience in your life and work hard on it. Stay specific and consistent. Most people don’t set goals. They subscribe to present moment happiness philosophy by eliminating goals. I love present moments, but I make my present moments even more valuable, because I’m working toward a goal. I wrote a complete guide to goal setting and living without regrets Start Late, Achieve Your Goals Anyway, and Live Without Regrets. You can download it for free here.

    7. Be happy. Be still.

“If you want to be happy, be.” Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy

“With all it’s sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.” Max Ehrmann c.1920

Don’t negotiate your own happiness with yourself. Don’t say: “One day I will be happy” That one day is today. There is no better time and place than now, to be happy.

If you wait for the knight in shining armor or to get rich to be happy, you are wasting one beautiful moment after another and they are lost forever.
Spend your time on your passions. On love. On the most important. What makes you happy? Do it today.

What a great list. I love no 3 especially. It’s a great reminder that action and activity in general don’t always take us where we want to go!

May I add one thing? Take a minute and do something for someone else. Maybe just a FB comment, or phone call or blog comment ;)
Giving (even just a few minutes time) to another always helps me with my perspective.
Plus there’s something magic about being selfless even if it’s just a small thing.

(First time to your blog- look forward to reading more)

Thank you Phyllis and welcome:)
I think doing something for someone else (serving) can be magical. It is also the hardest thing to do because you have to be very strong and secure about yourself if you want to help others.
That’s why creating a strong YOU is a first step to effectively helping others.
Thank you again. We need more people like you. Visit anytime.
Have a great sunday!
Derek

Yes Kristin,

I’m so glad that #1 is about gratitude–so often underestimated. But I’m happier that you ended with stillness–yes! yes! yes! In the midst of our go go go culture, I agree that it’s beyond important to be still and not to negotiate with ourselves. Happy begins NOW :-)

Hi Annie,
Thank you for visiting my blog. Great to be in the same tribe as well:)
Yes, to be grateful, focused yet calm, what an ideal to strive for?
We already know, that we are in charge of our own happiness. We just need to apply what we know. Everything begins NOW:)

Hi Emily,
Somehow, I missed your comment. I’m sorry for that.
Yes, we can certainly make things simpler, if we believe that we create our life!
Thank you so much for your comment.

Hey Derek,
Good points. Staying focused is a big one. Often it can derail some of the others. When you are able to focus, you accomplish more. The sense of contentedness you get spills into other areas (1,3,7).

Hi Rob,
Damn, I keep missing comments. That’s not good.
Staying focused is central in my philosophy of living. I can’t chop all the trees in the forest and neither I want to. I can decide on a few trees, just to build a house. Let’s not do everything. Just a few things are needed for a great life.

I like this post – it describes the way I felt on holiday this month. (I even created a goal list on the trip!)
